چکیده

Background: Factors such as tumour-stroma ratio (TSR) and peritumoral inflammation have been found to be reliable independent prognostic factors in some solid tumours. The aim of this preliminary study was to assess the relationship between these factors and the predicted prognosis based on the grade of the tumour in colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: Medical and pathological records of patients with potentially curative resected CRC at Yaoundé University Teaching Hospital from January 2009 to May 2015 were reviewed retrospectively for gender, age and some pathological factors such as tumour location, grade, differentiation and margin involvement. Corresponding pathological slides were proofreading by conventional microscopy for TSR and peritumoral inflammation. Tumours with less than 50% of stroma were considered as low stroma tumours and the remainders as high stroma tumours. Peritumoral inflammation was classified as low grade inflammation (score 0-1) and high grade inflammation (2-3) according to Klintrup-Makinen criteria. This was correlated to the above clinicopathological factors. Results: There were 58 patients. The mean age was 53.3 ± 15.7 years with a male to female ratio of 0.70. We found 81% of low stroma tumours and56.9% of high grade inflammation tumours. No correlation was found between TSR, peritumoral inflammation and standard clinicopathological factors. Only parietal invasion was significantly correlated with peritumoral inflammation (P=0.03). Conclusions: The role of the TSR and peritumoral inflammation still needs to be determined in our environment.

Is Bax/Bcl-2 Ratio Considered as a Prognostic Marker with Age and Tumor Location in Colorectal Cancer?

Background: Bax and Bcl-2 are the major members of Bcl-2 family whose play a key role in tumor progression or inhibition of intrinsic apoptotic pathway triggered by mitochondrial dysfunction. Therefore, the balance between pro- and anti-apoptotic members of this family can determine the cellular fate. Methods: In this study, the relative level of mRNA expression of Bax and Bcl-2 genes was deter...

Tumour inflammatory infiltrate predicts survival following curative resection for node-negative colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND A pronounced tumour inflammatory infiltrate is known to confer a good outcome in colorectal cancer. Klintrup and colleagues reported a structured assessment of the inflammatory reaction at the invasive margin scoring low grade or high grade. The aim of the present study was to examine the prognostic value of tumour inflammatory infiltrate in node-negative colorectal cancer. METHODS...

The relationship between tumour stroma percentage, the tumour microenvironment and survival in patients with primary operable colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND Tumour stroma percentage (TSP) has previously been reported to predict survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC); however, whether this is independent of other aspects of the tumour microenvironment is unknown. In the present study, the relationship between TSP, the tumour microenvironment and survival was examined in patients undergoing elective, curative CRC resection. PA...

Evaluation of preoperative elevation of serum c-reactive protein as an indicator for prognosis of colorectal cancer

Abstract   Background : Cancer has not been elucidated in colerectal site. C-reactive protein   (CRP) is a product synthesized in hepatocytes and has been reported to be up-regulated   by such proinflammatory cytokines as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6),   and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The significance of a preoperative serum elevation   was evaluated using CRP as a predictive i...

Peritumoral neutrophils link inflammatory response to disease progression by fostering angiogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND & AIMS Substantial evidence indicates that inflammation is a critical component of tumor progression. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is usually derived from inflamed cirrhotic liver with extensive leukocyte infiltration. Neutrophils are the common inflammatory infiltrate in tumors, but their nature and regulation in human cancers remain elusive. METHODS A total of 238 HCC patients ...
